What kind of experience and driving skills are you looking for in a driver?
Experience requirements
Years of Driving: At least 2–5 years of verifiable professional truck driving experience.
Heavy-Duty Vehicles: Proven record with articulated trucks, semi-trailers, flatbeds, and low-bed trailers.
Specialized Loads: Experience handling oversized cargo, containers, construction equipment, or hazardous materials is highly valued.
Route Familiarity: Long-haul routes across Ghana (Accra–Kumasi, Tema–Takoradi, border crossings). International corridors (e.g., Ghana–Burkina Faso, Ghana–Nigeria). Urban delivery routes requiring precision in congested traffic.
Driving skills
Vehicle Control: Confident in maneuvering multi-axle trucks and reversing trailers into tight spaces.
Load Management: Skilled in cargo securing, balancing loads, and using tie-downs/chains.
Navigation: Ability to use GPS systems, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and route planning tools.
Safety Compliance: Knowledge of Ghana’s Road Traffic Act and international Hours of Service (HOS) regulations.
Mechanical Awareness: Basic troubleshooting (e.g., tire changes, brake checks, fluid levels) to handle roadside issues.
Cross-Border Readiness: Familiarity with customs procedures, weigh stations, and international driving etiquette.
Preferred truck types
Articulated Trucks (18-wheelers). Flatbed & Low-Bed Trailers (for oversized loads). Tipper Trucks (construction and mining routes). Fuel Tankers (hazardous cargo endorsement required). Container Haulage Trucks (port-to-inland transport, especially Tema Port routes).
What other important things should drivers know or prepare for?
Simple application pathway for drivers
1. Initial expression of interest
Provide a single contact channel (email, or online form). Keep the first step lightweight: drivers only need to share name, license class, years of experience, and phone number. Example: “Send your details via [[NHPRO.email@example.com]] with subject Driver Application.”
2. Document submission
After initial contact, we will send you a branded checklist of required documents (license, medical certificate, police clearance, passport). Allow them to submit scanned copies via email or upload link.
3. Screening & feedback
NHPRO reviews submissions and responds with either: ✅ Next steps (interview, training, or sponsorship process). ❌ Feedback if requirements aren’t met, with advice on how to qualify.
4. Formal application packet
Once screened, drivers complete a branded NHPRO application form (digital or paper). This form should include consent for background checks and agreement to terms of sponsorship.
5. Confirmation & onboarding
Drivers receive a welcome message confirming they are in the pipeline. We provide them with a timeline and expectations (e.g., “Medical exam scheduled within 2 weeks”).
What specific licenses, permits, or certifications do drivers absolutely need to have to qualify?
International heavy haulage driver requirements
1. Licensing & certification
Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or equivalent in home country. Specialized endorsements (e.g., Hazmat, Tanker, Heavy Haul) depending on cargo type. International Driver’s Permit (IDP) may be required in some regions.
2. Experience
Minimum 2–5 years of verifiable heavy haulage/truck driving experience. Proven record of handling oversized loads, long-haul routes, or specialized equipment. Clean driving history (no major accidents or violations).
3. Documentation
Passport valid for at least 6–12 months. Work visa or sponsorship documents (often facilitated by employer/agency). Police clearance certificate for background checks. Medical fitness certificate (vision, hearing, cardiovascular health).
4. Skills & competencies
Knowledge of international road safety standards. Ability to operate GPS, electronic logging devices (ELDs), and modern fleet systems. Strong communication skills for cross-border coordination. Basic mechanical knowledge for troubleshooting trucks on the road.
5. Compliance & safety
Familiarity with Hours of Service (HOS) regulations in destination country. Training in cargo securing, load balancing, and emergency procedures. Adherence to company policies on alcohol/drug testing.
Ghana-specific driver requirements for heavy haulage
1. Licensing system
Commercial Driver’s License (CDL): Mandatory for operating heavy trucks, buses, trailers, and specialized vehicles. Classes & Endorsements: Ghana’s CDL system includes categories for different vehicle types (e.g., buses, taxis, haulage trucks). Endorsements may be required for hazardous materials, towing, or oversized loads. Issued by DVLA: The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority oversees testing, issuance, and renewals.
2. Eligibility & training
Minimum Age: Typically 21 years for heavy-duty vehicles. Education: At least Junior High School (JHS) completion is often expected. Training: Must complete DVLA-approved driving school or apprenticeship program. Testing: Written theory exam, road signs, safety rules, and practical driving test.
3. Documentation
Valid national driver’s license upgraded to CDL. Medical fitness certificate (vision, hearing, cardiovascular health). Police clearance certificate for background checks. Passport and visa documents if applying for international placements.
4. Compliance & safety
Adherence to Ghana’s Road Traffic Act (Act 683) and DVLA regulations. Knowledge of speed limits, cargo measurement restrictions, and required safety equipment. Regular renewal and refresher training to maintain license validity. Alcohol/drug testing compliance.
Important note:
There are two different requirements: Ghanaian type and International requirements. You do not need to have both. If you meet the Ghanaian requirements, that is acceptable. If you meet the international requirements, that is also acceptable.
